Right at the heart of Eastham, Windmill Green is one of those quintessential Cape Cod landmarks that stops you mid-drive and reminds you exactly where you are. Anchored by the oldest windmill on Cape Cod — the 1680 Eastham Windmill, a genuine Colonial-era treasure — this historic green is a gathering place, a photo op, and a quiet slice of living history all in one. The windmill itself was built in Plymouth, relocated to Eastham in 1793, and still turns its great wooden sails above the green like something out of a storybook.
The green serves as the town's de facto village common, and it earns that role beautifully. Families spread out on the grass, cyclists roll in off the nearby Cape Cod Rail Trail, and visitors wander over from the Eastham Visitor Center just up Route 6. In summer, the Eastham Windmill Weekend festival takes over the green with crafts, music, and community spirit — one of the Lower Cape's most beloved annual traditions, typically held in September. Even outside of festival season, Windmill Green rewards a visit.
