This is the same stretch of outer Cape shore that Henry Beston called home when he wrote 'The Outermost House,' his 1928 meditation on a year spent alone on the Atlantic edge. Naturalists, birders, and beachcombers will find the dune ecosystem and tideline endlessly rewarding, while swimmers and bodysurfers will be busy riding every set that rolls in off the open Atlantic.
Because Coast Guard Beach sits inside the National Seashore, it benefits from careful stewardship — no overdevelopment, no carnival concessions, just pristine sand and sea. Lifeguards are on duty in summer, and the Dune Center nearby offers interpretive ranger programs that are genuinely fascinating for both adults and curious kids. The beach is a long walk or a short seasonal shuttle ride from the Dune Center parking area (the lot at the beach itself is tiny and fills fast), which means the crowd self-selects for people willing to put in a little effort — always a good sign.
Come at sunrise if you can manage it: the light on the dunes is otherworldly, the beach is yours alone, and the seals — yes, there are seals — often haul out on the sandbars in the early morning hours. Come in September when the summer crowds thin, the water is actually at its warmest, and the whole outer Cape takes on a golden, elegiac quality that's practically impossible to describe without sounding like a poet.
